Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the functioning of the Slavonian and Petrinian Frontier (also referred to as the Slavonian Frontier or Varaždin Generalate) in the 17th century: its administrative and territorial organization, branches of the standing army, its numbers, and the soldiers’ ranks and salaries. The 17th century development is compared with the situation in the 16th century in order to make conclusions about the tendencies in tactics and strategies deployed by the Habsburg military in the Militärgrenze (Military Frontier).
