Promovarea progresului şi modelarea imaginii Timişoarei prin intermediul presei locale din secolul al XIX-lea
The promotion of progress and the image of Timişoara in the local press of the 19th century

Summary/Abstract: Besides its quality of documentary source, the press also means a modeling factor of the town image, by influencing the options, taste and behaviour of the readers. The particular conditions of the modern development of Timişoara in the 19th century favoured a special manner of understanding and reflecting the image of the city in the newspapers. The propaganda for progress became part of their subjects. The model imposed by „Temesvarer Zeitung“ to the other journals attempted to justify the major changes of the town (the reconstruction after 1849, the demolition of the city fortress, the urban extention, the architectural changes etc.). There are different articles dedicated to the 19th century town and, in spite of the real information, they all create a subjective image which sustains its development. Without the understanding and the propaganda for the historical built testimonies, Timişoara easier began to lose its ancient buildings in order to get a new image. The results of the spreading of such a pattern of urban image is also present nowadays, when the attitude of the press remains more active in sustaining the changes and modernisings, than in presenting the problems of protection of historical built heritage.
