Summary/Abstract: The author of this paper deals with the economic benefits and costs of association and future accession of the Republic of Macedonia to the European Union. Contrary to the popular view, according to which, the adhesion to the EU brings only benefits, the author emphasizes several groups of considerable costs. He analyses the benefits, as well. Having in mind the different time patterns of the costs and the benefits, the positive net-effects might be expected only after the adhesion to the Union. Nevertheless, due to the huge costs of non-joining the Union, it seems that there is no viable economic alternative to doubling the efforts in order to become a member of the Union as soon as possible.
