Summary/Abstract: Culture of remembrance is a concept distinguished from history and ideology, but these three often permeate one another and are inseparable. For the ruling elites to evoke past times and create narratives are processes that are typical for modern state (national) ideologies. Such narratives are often related to the myths that portray and describe important events in the history of one nation. The analysis of such narratives found in the Western Balkans countries shows that a great number of images and events from past are now forgotten and that the people of this region mostly remember only those symbols that forecast unpleasant and threatening future.
