Maritime transport and climate changes - Economic perspective

Summary/Abstract: In 2015, greenhouse gas emissions (GGE) from shipping represented about 2.6% of total global emissions. Considering the current evolution of international trade, GGE from ships is projected to increase 150% by 2050. After reviewing the impact of shipping on the environment, this paper provides an overview of the main measures that can be implimeted by the industry in order to reduce this impact. It also underlines the significant role of regulation in this effort.
