Traffic Safety and Air Raid Safety, or Puppet Theatre as Applied Theatre

Summary/Abstract: In my paper, I compare Béla Büky’s air raid safety puppet performance (Légvédelmi Jóska és Légoltalmi Kati /Joey Air-raid-defense and Katie Air-raid-safety/ 1939) with the Traffic Rules and Regulations performance created by the puppetry students of the National Puppet Theatre in 1974. I strive to examine the methods used by these applied puppet theatre productions, I enumerate the dramaturgical and narrative devices the authors rely on: by introducing and comparing the surviving fragments and versions of texts, I seek to circumscribe the tension that emerges between the educational intent of the text, and the qualities necessary to make it suitable for performance.
