A Brief Awakening to the Reality of German Art: Neue Sachlichkeit

Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on the German cultural movement that was born as a response to Expressionism and the aftermath of World War One. Neue Sachlichkeit, or New Sobriety, intended to keep arts and artists away from the political debate through a firm anchoring into scepticism and objectivity. Through an ironic twist of history, most of these artists were soon turned into victims of the National-Socialist persecution which eventually led to the demise of this distinctively German attitude in arts.
