Summary/Abstract: K.D. Balmont described the entire philosophy of the creator through the contrasting concepts which exist between impressionism and symbolism. The present analysis of Balmont’s poetry reveals the antithesis between the images of light and darkness, the opposition serving as the bedrock on which the poet formed his lyrical credo. The entire work discloses the symbols and motifs of light and darkness, their lyrical personification and philosophical interpretation in verses, which are characteristic of Balmont’s different periods of creation, namely impressionism and symbolism.
