Summary/Abstract: The present article examines how the theory of utilitarianism, highly debated in the Russian society of the 19th century, is embodied in the field of literature through the works of two fundamentally different authors: Vladimir Odoyevsky and Nikolay Chernyshevsky. Through this article we endeavour to discover how the polarity of the utopia-dystopia genre leads to the creation of two opposite ethe, which nevertheless stem from a sole reductive mentality.
