Summary/Abstract: This article examines how the endings of the instrumental sg. of nouns of the i-declension are described in Croatian grammars. In the modern standard Croatian language, these are the endings -ju and -i, although other endings were also used in the past. Several papers have been written on the distribution of the endings -ju and -i in the last few decades, but it is neither fully described nor fully standardized. The present study shows that the lexical-derivative approach is not sufficient to describe the selection of the endings -ju/-i and that it needs to be expanded to include syntactic criteria.
