Summary/Abstract: This arcitle deals with some linguistic problems regarding Angelo Masci’s deed Discorso sull’origine, costumi e stato attuale della natione albanese (1807), which was also republished in French by the Danish scholar Malte-Brun: Essai sur l’origine, les meures et l’état actuel de la nation albanaise, par M. Angelo Masci. Traduit de l’italien … (1808). The author of this article, Bardhyl Demiraj, has pointed out, inter alia, that A. Masci has linguistically rejected the opinion that the Balkan Albanians owe their origin to the Caucasian Albans and that there is a certain difference between Masci’s and Malte-Brun’s aim in examining the 102 Albanian words contained in Masci’s deed. Concerning the origin of the Albanian words examined by A. Masci, B. Demiraj has rejected the opinions that they have been partially taken out of Leibnitz’s publications and partially out of the ancient Albanian writers’ deeds. According to him, the Albanian words analyzed by Masci owe their origin to his native Calabrian subdialect. He has also analyzed the graphic system used by Masci. In this regard, he affirms that even the conventional letter <â> used by Masci in such words as <ghiâmb> [= gjëmb] etc. represents the stressed vowel <∂> of his native subdialect and of the Tosk dialect in general. After having reproduced all the lexical fund examined by Masci in his deed, the author of this article makes a few remarks concerning some of such lexical units. At the end he affirms, inter alia, that by his paper he aimed to clear up some debatable questions and to rectify some incorrect opinions regarding A. Masci’s and Malte-Brun’s contributions in Albanology.
