Summary/Abstract: This essay attempts to define “the new” as a poetological term. The new is discussed in relation to Stefan Morawski’s seminal study Perypetie problematyki nowości w dziejach myśli estetycznej [The history of the new in the history of aesthetic thought], the so-called quarrel of the Ancients and the Moderns, and selected approaches to the concept in relation to avant-garde art.
