The Seal of Critique

Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on the critical tradition which emphasizes the objective and, for materialists like Marx, social character of metaphysical illusions. I relate the latter to the concept of “real abstraction” and, drawing on instances when the critical tradition itself recognizes affinities between metaphysical and visionary illusions, I suggest an alternative reading of the “hauntological” motifs in Marx towards an understanding of ideology as occult social force.
