Summary/Abstract: The article deals with a specific type of morphological change - subtraction, which seems to have been neglected in the Bulgarian linguistic literature. The analysis is in terms of prototypes (ideal realizations) and deviations from them (part 1). Five basic morphological techniques: affixation, substitution, modification, conversion and subtraction, are used in the representation of morphological rules (part 2). Part 3 offers criteria for determining the direction of derivation. Part 4 defines subtraction as a morphological technique and differentiates it from non-derivational processes which involve clipping. Part 5 briefly illustrates the various types of subtraction in Bulgarian, point out the sources of subtraction and comments on the productivity of the subtractive models.
