Summary/Abstract: The naive picture of space and the generally accepted present-day scientific understanding of the problem show considerable similarity as demonstrated by a comparison of a limited group of linguistic items - phraseological units expressing emotions (including somatisms) in Bulgarian and Polish. The ‘physical portrait’ of space revealed in those phraseological units is made up of features accepted as prototypical in modem science: movement and its forms, variability and stability, metric properties. Nevertheless, the two languages conceptualize the common experience of the two nations in a different way depending on their structural properties. Language has a leading role in shaping the concept of space.
