Summary/Abstract: Ivan Momčilov is one of the most prominent grammarians and teachers of the Late National Revival period. His philological achievements are the result of systematic study and close observation of the linguistic developments to which he was very sensitive since early age. The appearance of Grammar of Modern Bulgarian (Ruscuk, 1868) would have been impossible without Pismenicata na slavjanskiya ezik [Writing in the Slavic language] (Belgrade, 1847) and Gramatikata na starobalgarskija ezik po vsickoto mu razvitie [The Grammar of Old Bulgarian in all its development] (G. Oryahovitsa - Vienna, 1865), two stepping stones in the development of Bulgarian grammatical thought.
