Summary/Abstract: This is a study of ventonyms still in use among fishermen (Bulgarians, Gagauz, Turks and Tartars) in the area between Balchik and Cape Kaliakra in the north of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. Compared to a period some 30-50 years ago, when fishermen were much more strongly dependent on the elements, knowledge of the names of winds blowing all the year round in this aquatory has been considerably reduced. Only 19 ventonyms - 14 of them names of winds orientated according to the four cardinal points and another 5 of winds blowing in the coastal area - are still remembered from among the 32 kinds of wind belonging to the wind-rose and known previously. The article aims to describe those winds and provoke further study on this topic.
