Summary/Abstract: The article examines the expressions naming play upon words in the various European languages, paying special attention to their connotations. Alternative lexical items belonging to the same semantic field are pointed out. Hypotheses about the etymology of the expressions used in antiquity and in the Romance, Germanic and Slavic languages are considered. The aim is to discover the initial ideas and images underlying this concept.
