Summary/Abstract: The monograph studies the question of the division of words into parts of speech. The author offers a detailed overview of the classifications during antiquity and the Middle Ages. A significant space is devoted to the Russian school. The third chapter examines chronologically the concepts of the parts of speech existing in Bulgarian linguistics – starting with Neofit Rilski’s grammar and ending with Ruselina Nitsolova’s work. Finally, the author presents his own concept of the number, classification criteria and nature of the word classes in modern Bulgarian.
