Summary/Abstract: Through the ongoing research in recent decades, we are beginning to gain a better understanding of the topography of archaic Athens. However, there are some issues in the 7th/6th century BC cityscape, to which we cannot give a satisfactory answer despite the excavations that still take place today. One of these obscure points concerns theatrical spaces used before the construction of the Theatre of Dionysos. It is not clear where the sanctuary called ‘Lenaion’ or the orchestra and ikria mentioned by the lexicographers was located, nor is it clear that beside the theater on the southern slope of the Acropolis in Athens what other theatrical venues were used for performances and choral contests. The study examines the above issues in the context of the topographical problems of archaic Athens in the light of the available literary, archaeological and epigraphical sources.
