Summary/Abstract: Procopius of Caesarea depicted the Empire’s relations with the Ostrogoths during Amalasuntha’s rule (526–535) on two levels. On the one hand, he showed the interstate relations between Constantinople and Ravenna and the personal ones between Amalasuntha and Justinian, and on the other hand he also addressed regional issues, i.e. the situation on the border between the two states in northern Illyricum Orientale. It follows from his account that there was peace between the states and friendly cooperation between the rulers, while at the same time the Ostrogoths owned lands which belonged to the Empire. Since not only were there no armed conflicts between the Empire and the Ostrogoths, but Justinian did not question the border or make territorial claims against them, we cannot use a military conflict between Byzantium and the Ostrogoths to explain the Emperor’s territorial gains in northern Illyricum in 526–535.
