Summary/Abstract: The following article focuses on the issue of penal legitimacy. The goal of this paper is to explain how the state apparatuses can utilize right-wing extremism to strengthen their legitimacy. Right-wing extremism is presented as a vaguely defined threat to the safety of law-abiding citizens, their democratic society or the idea of democracy itself. The state apparatuses subsequently demonstratively oppose this threat to create and reinforce the perception of the state as a guarantee of safety and a vigilant guardian of the social order, willing and able to punish any transgressions. According to the concept of penal legitimacy, such a perception may then be used by the state apparatuses as a resource of legitimacy.
