Summary/Abstract: The text discusses the Bulgarian theatre’s reaction to two socio-political changes – the communist coup of 9 September 1944 and the beginning of transition to democracy from 10 November 1989. After 1944 Bulgaria took the road of authoritarian communism and this brought for a total change of the Bulgarian theatre. In general terms this change was associated with the cancellation or limitation of freedom of choice when making a repertoire, when writing new Bulgarian texts, when choosing means of theatrical expression etc. The second emphasis in the text is how the Bulgarian theatre reacted after the ideological compulsions had been removed in 1989. The Bulgarian artists had unlimited freedom to choose whichever texts they want to put on the stage and so they turned towards the texts and stage practices, which had been missing in the previous years. This artistic freedom and lack of limitations was being used mostly by the Bulgarian theatre directors who made use of the unlimited possibilities for interpretations and for making collages of texts in their various staging styles.
