Summary/Abstract: Theories that have linked the explanation of crime to biology argue that crime is caused by certain defects in an individual's biological makeup. There was even an initial tendency in theories of this nature to suggest that biological imperfections in the individual gave rise to physical marks, which thus made it easier to identify criminals and differentiate them from law-abiding citizens. Although the popularity of earlier biological theories has waned in the contemporary period, research in the field has continued, bringing important discoveries to date, which cannot, however, determine which specific genetic factors lead to differences in behaviour. Based on these theories, crime prevention measures could include genetic testing of the public; but once individuals carrying genes that predispose to crime are tested, this will automatically give rise to a question that is unlikely to be answered: what do we do with these individuals?
