Summary/Abstract: NATO has come a long way to adopt the 2022 Strategic Concept at the Madrid Summit (June 2022), a document which is the expression of the member states’ vision regarding the Alliance’s place and role in the new security context. The Strategic Concepts usually receive great scholarly attention, due to their position as the second most important document after the Washington Treaty. This article provides a preliminary assessment of the 2022 Strategic Concept by examining the elements of continuity and change, using qualitative research methods, such as document and content analysis. Thus, this issue is addressed based on an analysis of the concepts and terminology used in the 2022 Strategic Concept, considering them relevant for the direction in which the Alliance will evolve. From a structural point of view, this paper contains a section dedicated to the importance of Strategic Concepts, followed by a comparative analysis of the provisions of the concepts developed in the post-Cold War era and, finally, a section dedicated to 2022 Strategic Concept.
