Summary/Abstract: The first ideas about a common country of the Southern Slav peoples had come into existence during the Revolution of 1848 in the territories under the Habsburg rule, but they could not develop in full, because they were cut off by the Bach absolutism (1848-1859). After the fall of Bach’s regime, when, in the beginning of the 1860-s, the centralistic Austria was about to become a federal state, the conditions were created for a breakthrough of new, federalist ideas.
