Summary/Abstract: The author has reviewed selected textbooks written in the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century and meant for the learning of Polish by French-speaking people. Attention is drawn to both the external (historical, social and institutional context) and internal determinants (the structure of the textbooks, the choice of themes, the type and quality of examples). These determinants seemed to be important in the description of sources belonging to the historical methods of teaching and learning foreign languages. The suggested way of describing old sources could result in a holistic approach to old textbooks and could be helpful in securing a proper place for them in the history of the Polish language.
