Summary/Abstract: Regardless the great interest toward the Bulgarian periodicals, a special research of its juridical state and its dependence on the political power and its means of control is not made. And without a concrete research of the role of the censorship and its influence upon the self-consciousness of the professional freedom which creates the specific atmosphere of the journalistic work, a thorough study of the past of the periodicals cannot be made, and also a clear and detailed picture of the socio-political conditions in which it exists and a most precise ideological and political characteristics of the editions and of the journalists cannot be given. And if the censorship is a mark of the state of the socio-political reality, the agreement for subordination is already an element of the ideological and political characteristics of the press, and the degree of loyalty under the conditions of the severe political control – a proof of the personal and professional qualities of every journalist. The given article strives to fulfil this emptiness in the research of the Bulgarian periodicals in Constantinople. In its first part a characteristics of the first Bulgarian editions is made and of the conditions under which they emerge and develop. The Ottoman orders and the press legislation are analyzed and it is cleared how they become a means of political pressure and a confirmation is made of the palliative nature of the Ottoman policy of reforms. The second part is dedicated to the practical ability of the Bulgarian journalists in the Ottoman capital to protect their ideas. An analysis is made of the choice of information and main themes with which the national interests are defended and the idea of the Bulgarian liberation is conducted. Regardless of the unsuitable conditions for a complete development and besides its own faults the Bulgarian press in Constantinople manages to show and defend the aspirations of the Bulgarian people for an independent political life. With the advantage of its legal existence and free distribution the Bulgarian press in the Ottoman capital carries out a considerable role not only for the formation of a characteristic Bulgarian politic mentality but for the creation of the new national political culture.
