The river name Rata in the southwestern Rhodopes and its equivalents in eastern Europe

Summary/Abstract: The river Rata runs through the South-western part of the Rhodopes. The single identical parallel to the Bulgarian river name Rata can be found in West Ukraine. The paper aims at unifying different interpretations and analyses of various scholars. It appears that the origin of the name could be twofold: it could have originated from an anthroponym or it could have an appellative form.
