Summary/Abstract: The article offers a comparison of part of the Proto-Germanic lexis inherited in German and English as pairs of cognates (lexemes that can be traced back to the same common source). The most important regularities accounting for their subsequent formal differentiation are pointed out. The lexical items are divided into thematic groups. The main goal is to establish which pairs represent cases of homosemy (sameness of meaning) and of heterosemy (semantic differentiation). In other words, the question is which of the analyzed cognates have to some extent preserved a shared meaning and which of them do not correspond semantically any longer.
