Summary/Abstract: The 14th of November 1989 marks the hundredth anniversary of the birth of Jawaharial Nehru, one of the most distinguished sons of India. Because of his philosophical and ethnic notions he is among the most popular political figures in the world. Nehru, however, was not only a politician, he was also a writer, a philosopher, a historian, a connoisseur of the arts. This fact became known in Bulgaria only after the publishing of his book “Discovery of India” in 1955. At that time, the work of a foreign author seldom registered such a great success. The author points out that Nehru’s conceptions, developed at a time of dogmatic and antidemocratic ideas, characterize him as a thinker who has clearly seen through, and put an emphasis on, the faults of a social order which is today disintegrating before our very eyes.
