Summary/Abstract: In the second half of nineteenth century the inhabitants of Chirpan took part in a number of events which were of nation-wide importance. The town was included in the network of revolutionary committees built up by Vassil Levski, many of the townspeople joined the Thracian conspiracy, many of them took part in the Stara Zagora and the April Uprising and in the events related to the proclamation of the Unification of Bulgaria. No doubt the leadership of the national revolution appreciated not only the favourable geographical situation of the town and the rebellious spirit of its inhabitants, but also noted the presence of resolute and selfless local leaders. One of these people was Stoyu Filipov who was popular not only with the population in the region of Chirpan, but also, all over Southern Bulgaria.
