Summary/Abstract: The problem of the restructuring of higher education in Bulgaria in the period from September 9, 1944 to the year 1948 is insufficiently studied by history. This fact determines to a certain degree the author’s concern with the problem. Due to some restrictions as to the volume of the article, mainly the structural changes of higher education, are considered without treating in detail the changes in the contents of the syllabus. The Programme of the Fatherland Front of September 17, 1944 formulated the tasks which the Fatherland Front Government was to carry out in the field of education, namely: broad democratization of education and eradication of the authoritarian ideology. In seeking to democratize higher education, however, the new authorities made a big mistake by allowing a vast number of students to enroll in the higher education establishments although there were not adequate conditions for doing it (the material basis was very poor, universities were understaffed and so on). A positive moment was the opening of new higher education establishments, faculties and departments, but here decisions were made too rashly sometimes without taking into account the country’s possibilities (for example, the opening of the Technical School in Rousse). After the elections for Grand National Assembly (October 27, 1946) the intervention of the Bulgarian Workers Party (communist) in determining the policy to be followed in the field of higher education was ever more tangibly felt. The two laws of higher education adopted in the 1947–1948 period were of key importance.
