Summary/Abstract: The article examines an Ottoman list, dating from 1549–1550, of the mercenary troops of the Sultan stationed in Hungary. The contents of this defter shows how and where were enlisted the troops for the formation of the first Ottoman garrisons in Hungary, what forces secured Ottoman domination in one of the most strongly contested provinces of the Empire for which it was necessary to fight almost every year,. The information contained in the register leads to reflections and a comparisons with Ottoman practice in Bulgaria one century and a half earlier. The comparisons and inferences fill the concluding pages of the article.
