Summary/Abstract: The author has traced and studied part of the commercial correspondence of Sliven and Zheravna merchants during the period before the Liberation. The activity of prominent merchants in the Sliven area is followed up over a period of more than 50 years with the help of several basic types of documents: ledgers, commercial contracts, annual balance-sheets, bills of exchange and letters. The merchants purchased wool, cloth, hides and other commodities from Northern Dobroudja, Kotel and its surroundings and sold them in Sliven, Stara Zagora, Constantinople and at the fairs in Asia Minor. They also traded in timber, livestock, groceries and regularly attended the markets in the area, as well as the big fairs and markets in the Northeastern Bulgarian lands. The documents shed additional light on the complex and many-sided production and commercial relations in the Sliven area during the National Revival period.
