Summary/Abstract: The basic aspects of the political line followed by the Democratic Party in 1930 up to May 1931 are clarified in this article. The attention of the authoress focuses on the differences and vacillations in the behaviour of the leading party team and the motives for that. Taking into consideration the changes in the economic and political situation in the country, the democrats intensified their political activity and formulated some of the most essential demands in their platform. A central place in them was occupied by the idea of a “new administration”. In the name of this goal they made steps towards parliamentary co-operation with the bourgeois parties of the opposition and with the Bulgarian Agrarian People's Union, and took part in extraparliamentary actions against the regime of the Democratic Accord. All that time, with different degrees of intensity were held also talks on establishing an opposition coalition with a view to the forthcoming parliamentary elections. Parallel with that, for a number of reasons of an ideological and political character, the party leaders did not exclude the participation of the Democratic Accord in the future “new administration”. During the cabinet crisis in April – May 1931 the democrats tried to form a coalition government with the participation of the Accord. Despite the compromises they had made in the course of the negotiations with the members of the Democratic Accord, they did not give up the commanding positions in the administration and did not allow a split in the opposition or the stabilization of the regime. After their failure to impose their view on the way out from the crisis, the Democratic Party finally orientated itself towards the establishment of a new opposition political centre with the participation of the Agrarian Union as well.
