Summary/Abstract: An underground line in Prague had been seriously considered since the time of the so-called First Czechoslovak Republic. However, it took four more decades for the construction to start. It was not until the work was under way that the decision was made that it would not be an underground tram line but a real underground train line. The Czechoslovak-Soviet cooperation had a fundamental influence on the visual appearance of the first underground line. The next lines, however, were given an original design, and their architecture was tastefully incorporated into the city’s historical centre.
