Summary/Abstract: The Greek colony of Messambria, founded at the end of the 6th century BC, started to mint its own coins very early. The beginning of its coinage was during the first half of the 5th century BC. A total of 29 coins are included in this publication, dated to 5th–4th century BC. The drachma with archaic images (№ 1 in the catalogue), known only from 3 publications, is of particular interest. Also extremely rare is the obol of the type “Athena facing left/META in four squares” (№ 17 in the catalogue). This is the first time the author publishes another rare coin – a diobol with a monogram of a monetary magistrate “MO” on the reverse (№ 9 in the catalogue). This publication also includes 4 barbarous imitations of Messambrian coins – 2 diobols (№ 10 and 11 in the catalogue) and 2 obols (№ 26 and 27 in the catalogue). They date from the 4th century BC and were produced by Thracians. Personally, the author is not aware of any other publications of these types of imitation coins.
