Summary/Abstract: „Sophrosyne” or „Wisdom of the Earth”, a Brancusi artwork intensly mediatised in 2016 and for the purchase of which over 100,000 people donated, seems to have been sent by the Romanian courts and authorities in a purgatory from which no one is able, or particularly interested in saving it. Although it is up to the reader to appreciate the fairness of the restitution order, currently the artwork is not on display and no change is to be foreseen. The article aims to present a sample of Romanian jurisprudence in the field of famous artwork restitution and the ordeals through which rightful owners have been put.
