Summary/Abstract: Starting with the differences in theoretical approaches to the syntax of Croatian and other Slavic languages, this article deals with the modal component of certain types of simple expressions, i. e. of sentences with different discourse functions (declaratives, interrogatives, imperatives and desideratives). Comparing Croatian modal patterns with those of Czech, Polish and Russian, the author attempts to re-define basic modal patterns in Croatian.
