Summary/Abstract: In his article of A.A. Ulunyan reviews the Russian periodical press after the revolutionary events in Europe of 1848 and the censorship imposed over it by Tzar Nicholas I. He outlines the two tendencies in the development of the various Russian newspapers. The author follows the development of the conflict between Russia and Turkey that grew into a war between a wide European coalition and Russia, the international situation, the diplomatic activities and the mistakes of the Russian Tzar. The outbreak of the war increased the interest of the readers towards Turkey and the sufferings of the Slaves living under its rule. That interest provoked the publication of series of articles (Russian and foreign), memories, and reviews of books in the Russian periodical press. The military activities awaken the hopes of the Bulgarians for liberation. The author follows the creation of the first Bulgarian organizations whose aim was to assist the Russian soldiers and to prepare for the struggle within Bulgaria. He describes the warm welcome given to the Russian troops by the Bulgarian people in the liberated towns and the refugee wave for Russia that followed the retreat of the Russian armies. All those events provoked the publication in the Russian periodical press of many articles that informed the readers about the historical past of Bulgaria, described the various Bulgarian towns, gave some demographic data and mentioned the first steps of the Bulgarian periodical press.
