Summary/Abstract: A very subtle observer of today's society, Houellebecq describes the world in his works in order to help the reader to have an accurate conception of it. To achieve that purpose, his main concern is realism: his questions about the art of novel center on the creation of an artistic image that could give a true picture of objective reality. In La Carte et le territoire, Houellebecq brings forward an artist who exemplifies this practice by depicting the world through snapshots of maps found in Michelin guidebooks. We deem it interesting to see how the writer uses tourist maps to show the world and give glimpses of his aesthetic theories about the novel at the same time.
