Summary/Abstract: This paper analyses the discourse effects related to the defining sentence Le vaccin c’est… from the perspective of the definiens selected. Such sentences establish new referential usages for the given notion in order to support argumentatively a certain point of view put forward. This can be achieved by exploiting the argumentative value of defining sentences which derives from the fact that they legitimate the passage from the defined term to an open range of terms (Plantin, 2016: 194). Considering these aspects, this paper looks into analysing the implication of defining sentences in media discourse starting from the prerequisite that the selection of a certain definiens for a term translates the speaker’s persuasive intention.
