Plurilingualism in Guadeloupe and Seychelles – an Ecological Approach

Summary/Abstract: Both in Guadeloupe and in Seychelles a French-based creole co-exists with French. In addition to this shared main ecological parameter, the two areas diverge in several other points of their contact ecology. While the Seychelles was a British colony from 1814 to independence in 1976, Guadeloupe always remained French and is still a French overseas department. In both areas, the role of creole, the competences and varieties of French and the impact of English on the language contact situation are very different. In the last paragraph of this paper, we present the results of a recent sociolinguistic enquête as to the role of French in the contact ecology of the Seychelles.
