Summary/Abstract: Discussed here are the controversial and multidimensional notions of state of law, political pluralism and civil society. Disastrous experiences of a one - party state during a long period have ideologically discredited the state of the rule of law and abolished the emancipatory potentials of political pluralism and civil society. However, these concepts are revived in course of the last decade withibn the crisis of the real socialism. These key categories of the modem bourgeois society1 becam again legal and actual, plaing an important role in democratic transformation. Since all three notions mentioned above are very much used in political life without sufficient knowledge as to their origin, genesis and contemporary importance, the author analyzes their contents and mutual relatedness. This analysis is followed by critical review of these concepts, as well as an elaboration of their relevance for contemporary socialism, including the situation in Yugoslav society.
