Summary/Abstract: The Day of Romanian Language, celebrated on 31 August and declared a festive day of Romania by Law no. 53/2013, is inspired by a crucial moment in the recent history of the Republic of Moldova (1989), when Romanian language was declared a state language and Latin script was reinstated. Fight for freedom was then associated with the officially-recognized right to speak and write in the language of the forefathers. Following the proclamation of the state independence of the Republic of Moldova (27 August 1991), „our Romanian language”, as poet Grigore Vieru termed it, has been officially celebrated every year on 31 August, in the Republic of Moldova, with echoes in Romania, demonstrating our gratitude to those who have contributed to the preservation of the national consciousness, of our communion in thought, faith, language and sentiment. This feast is a felicitous opportunity for us to rediscover, together with all speakers of Romanian across the world, the dignity and unity of a Christ-loving people, many times crucified by history, but still alive and carrying much light and great blessings, kept and fostered in the spirit of peace and humility (...).For today’s generations living on both sides of Prut River, our common Romanian language is the basis for fraternal communication and communion, facilitating access to education and mass media, mainly to the benefit of out pupils and students. Ethnic identity and linguistic unity are the backbone of our awareness as bimillennial Latin people of apostolic Christian faith. Also, Romanian language is increasingly operating as a bond between the diaspora and the motherland, as well as a distinct contribution brought by Romanians to the European spiritual patrimony, perceived as multilingual and multicultural richness. Hopefully, this Day of the Romanian Language will be to us all a day of gratitude to God and of rejoicing in our communion of thought, faith and sentiment, expressed in our „sweet and beautiful” Romanian speech (...).
