Summary/Abstract: On 17-18 May 2021, the Faculty of Orthodox Theology in Alba Iulia hosted the 20th edition of the International Symposium of Science, Theology and Art (ISSTA). Due to the circumstances created by the pandemic, this event entitled Pastoral Work and Mission in the Diaspora took place online, and was attended by major personalities of theological research as well as social sciences and humanities, from Romania and abroad. On Monday, 17 May 2021, His Eminence Archbishop Irineu officiated a Te-Deum service and delivered the opening address for the symposium proceedings. In his address, His Eminence Archbishop Irineu highlighted the intrinsic bond between our ancestral faith and the development of the Romanian people, which was born Christian, on the territory of Pontic Dacia. He offered practical advice on how to maintain a fruitful, dynamic relationship with the Romanians living abroad. The contributions were presented under four thematic panels, according to the participants’ academic interests and research areas: 1. Romanian diaspora and the challenges raised by diversity; 2. At home in the diaspora: Romanian Orthodoxy abroad – identity marker and missionary calling; 3. Pastoral work abroad: identity and mission; 4. „The beauty that will save the world”. The symposium proceedings continued on the following day, 18 May 2021, with academic contributions and the concluding session. The ISSTA symposium was part of a series of events organized by the Faculty of Orthodox Theology in Alba Iulia during 2021, the year proclaimed by the Romanian Patriarchate as Solemn Year dedicated to the pastoral care for Romanians abroad. In the future, the symposium’s proceedings will certainly generate further investigations, reflections and approaches, which will lend fresh impetus to the pastoral-missionary endeavours of the Church and of today’s theological thinking.
