Summary/Abstract: For quite a long time, the possibility of pursuing in-depth studies of modernism was compromised in Russia, and the studies that were produced were necessarily incomplete due to ideological restrictions. Russian modernism tended to evince the features of European modernism, but it also had a set of its own features. In the beginning, the avant-garde in Russia, an extreme form of modernism, was dominated by the European model. Later, however, the relationship was inverted, and the Russian avant-garde triggered changes in, for instance, Italian futurism in its later phases. Russian modernism had a paradoxical and dramatic evolution, determined by the contrast between the artist’s thirst for freedom and the politicians’ pragmatic orientations. Russian modernists demonstrated the cultural-historical relativity of forms and means of creation and experimented with new modes of creations. All currents of Russian modernism resulted in a synchronization of Russian and world literature, which is the reason why the significant role of Russian modernism in the configuration of European modernism cannot be contested. The current study deals with symbolism, acmeism, futurism and imagism in a corpus of texts of our own choice. The discussion of Russian modernism can overlook neither groups such as Serapion’s Brothers, OPOIAZ, OBERIU, or artistic and literary trends among which we count constructivism. However, their particular relevance for the Russian avant-garde will be dealt with in a separate study.
