Summary/Abstract: This study explores changes in the healthy eating discourse in texts appearing from 1949 to 1990 in the Slovenian women’s and family monthly magazine Naša žena (Our Woman). The main aim was to answer three questions: 1) what Naša žena considered healthy eating; 1) whose responsibility healthy eating was; and 3) why its readers ought to cook and eat healthily. A qualitative analysis of the texts shows that only the content of the advice changed, but the underlying structure did not since throughout all of this period healthy eating was mainly understood as a civic and/or moral duty of a woman/wife/mother. However, the housewife was never allowed to cook her way into an ideal society. Naša žena would at one stage be sending her towards the “modern” future and yet, just when she was just about to reach it, Naša žena sent her towards a “premodern” one.
