Summary/Abstract: The architecture which some people call “Fascist” has a great power of fascination over professionals or simple individuals. Many universities have dedicated extensive classes for this moment in the architectural history. Trying to create a new “national architecture”, an extremely problematic issue for the Italic peninsula because of the mass diffusion of Greco-Roman, Renaissance or Baroque styles firstly in the entire Europe and then all over the world through the Eclectical or Academic styles, the Mussolini’s architects might have been discovered something close to the very essence of the urban architecture. Considering the specific state of the area, the quest for finding the basic elements which could generate a national architecture becomes the quest for finding the essence of the architecture from all times, all over the word. This is the reason why the result of the Italian architect’s work is far beyond “modernism”, “simplified neo-classicism” or “rationalism”. They finally succeeded to create something echoing the past in a poetical manner but in the same time like a scientific test and that fact we can better call “metaphysical architecture” although these two terms might seem contradictory when together. The Aldo Rossi’s buildings or projects are following the same path. We don’t know the details of this filiation, but if we should make a short assertment over the Rossi’s career we just should repeat the words above with the single difference of the historical and socio-political context.
